The person I am going to tell you about is Xiaoming, my deskmate back in primary school. On day one, we enrolled, and the teacher assigned us to sit together. At first, he was just another classmate, but soon I found we shared the same enthusiasm for football and lived in the same community, which shortened our distance and made us best friends.

Apart from football, we also often solved puzzles together. One day, I bought a 3-dimensional peanut jigsaw from the street market opposite my school to kill time. It consisted of plastic peanuts of various shapes and a hyaline jar. You needed to pile up the peanuts against the inner surface and cover it without leaving any space. I believed I had exhausted all the possible ways, but there was always one or two pieces left or some space in the middle.

Noticing my embarrassing situation, Xiaoming proposed to let him give it a go. After multiple times of failures, he came up with a brilliant idea. Why not turn this 3D jigsaw into a 2-dimensional one? He tore a piece of paper off his worksheet, drew out all the peanuts’ projections, and cut them off. He calculated that the converted jigsaw should be 10-column wide and 6-row high to work this out. This puzzle suddenly became extremely easy. Within five minutes, he got an answer. He then started to arrange the peanuts according to the converted version. All the pieces fitted each other perfectly.
