The foreign country I am going to tell you is Japan. It is an island country located to the east of China. As one of the most developed countries on the world, I bet you must have heard about it and have a certain degree of understanding.

我要告诉你的国家是日本。它是中国东边的一个岛国。作为世界上最发达的国家之一，我打赌你一定听说过，并对它有一定程度的理解。

Given the historical entanglement between China and Japan, ever since primary school, Chinese pupils have been educated about its ferocity and cruelty. In 1931, Japan invaded China from the northeast and did not pull back until 1945 when its emperor declared defeat. This article is from Laokaoya website. During this period, over 30 million Chinese people died and most of them were innocent civilians. So at first, Japan was just another word for evil in my mind.

鉴于中国和日本之间的历史纠缠，中国学生从小学起就会被教育有关日本的残暴行为。日本于1931年从东北方向入侵中国，直到1945年天皇宣布战败才撤退。在这期间，超过3000万中国人民丧命，大多数都是平民。所以一开始，在我脑海中，日本就是邪恶的另一种说法。

But when I got to high school, I accidentally watched a Japanese Anime called Gundan seed. It deeply reflected the sufferings wars brought and presented a different image of Japanese people. It seems that they are just normal individuals like us, who have beloved ones, relatives and can feel the pain.

但当我上高中时，我偶然看了一部叫做高达Seed的日本动漫。它深刻反思了战争所带来的痛苦，并呈现出不一样的日本人民形象。似乎他们跟我们普通人一样，也有爱人、亲戚，也会感到伤痛。

The more I learn about this country, the more confused I am. How could such a normal nation have behaved so ruthlessly in the war. They used live persons for medical experiments and toxic gas testing, killed civilians simply for fun and even set competition to see who could cut more heads off in the given time. That is why I want to keep digging into it and try to figure out the logic between their contrasting behaviours.

我越了解这个国家，我就越困惑。如此一个正常的民族为什么在战争中表现的如此残酷。他们使用活人做医学实验和毒气测试，仅仅为了娱乐就屠杀平民，甚至设置比赛看谁能在一定时间内砍下更多的脑袋。这是我为什么想要继续研究它的原因，想要努力弄清楚他们巨大反差行为背后的逻辑。
