I am going to tell you about an experience that I gave advice to my niece to correct her English pronunciation during last summer vacation. Back then, I had devoted most of my time to playing video games, hanging out with my friends, and reading novels. Noticing my idleness, my aunt asked me to tutor my niece, who was in the fifth grade of primary school and had an enormous amount of homework to finish.
我要告诉你的经历是,我在去年暑假的时候给我侄女建议以纠正她的英语发音。那时候,我几乎将所有的时间用在玩游戏,跟朋友玩,和看小说上。注意到我的无所事事,我阿姨就让我辅导我侄女学习。她当时上小学五年级,有大量的家庭作业需要完成。
During this process, I found that although she had been learning English for 5 years, most of her classes had focused on the words, phrases, and grammatical rules, while ignoring its pronunciation. As a result, she could read some English articles and even understand some lines in English movies, but she often confused me when she tried to conduct a conversation in this language.
在这一过程中,我发现虽然她已经学习英语五年了,但大多数课程都关注于其单词、短语和语法,而忽略了发音。这样一来,她能够阅读一些英语文章,甚至理解英语电影中的某些台词,但在跟我用这种语言交流的时候却常常让我十分困惑。
Therefore, instead of instilling more lexical resources and grammar into her, I advised her to dub movies. In general, she first listened to the original lines, tried her best to mimic them, and recorded her own version. This article is from laokaoya website. Then she played it out to see where the difference lay and optimized it. The whole process would be repeated 3 or 4 times before moving to the next sentence. With this method, she could realize where she had made mistakes, how the different syllables were connected, and how to perform liaison, contraction, and reduction.
因此,与其给她灌输更多的词汇和语法,我建议她给电影配音。大体来说,她首先听原版台词,然后努力模仿它们,并录下自己的版本。然后放出来看差别在哪里,再进行优化。整个过程会重复三四遍,然后才会进行到下一句话。用这种方法,她能意识到自己哪里犯了错误,不同的音节是怎么连接的,以及如何进行连读、缩读和弱读。
I was proud of what I did. Although her oral English was far from perfect when the summer vacation came to an end, I could at least figure out what she was talking about rather than being perplexed by obscure sounds. Moreover, she also had a lot of fun with it. She often indulged in the practice for hours without feeling tired.
我对我自己做的事情很骄傲。虽然在暑假结束的时候,她的英语口语远远算不上完美,但至少我能听懂她在说什么,而不是为模糊不清的读音而感到困惑。此外,她也从中获得了许多快乐。她经常沉浸于这种练习之中好几个小时而不觉得累。
